Approved Planning design of a new build house on an awkward site looking towards the River Mersey. A mix of contemporary design with traditional materials – buff coloured brickwork contrasting with sharp charcoal black timber cladding.

The site is located within what once were gardens associated with the terraced houses opposite. These garden plots have been developed over the recent years & half of the plots contain dwellings. This plot is over half a metre lower than the pavement level & effectively hidden behind a boundary wall. We took a different approach to the layout & footprint of the proposed building to that of the other garden plot dwellings which locate a generally square shaped building filling one half of the site. Whilst this leaves the remainder of the site available for garden & parking, it doesn’t necessarily relate best to the site itself as it results in windows from the main habitable rooms looking hard against the boundary.

Our approach was to divide the building into separate single & two storey elements. The single storey element of the Living/Dining/Kitchen & Entrance space runs parallel to the road boundary. This allows a large glazed sliding window to look out into the private garden without overlooking or being overlooked by the neighbours. As this single storey element is hidden behind the boundary wall it reduces the impact on the houses opposite. The two storey element contains the bedrooms & is located to the North West of the site to reduce the impact on the terraced houses opposite.
